In my last post I mention some printed silk I purchased at Mood Fabrics in the NYC fabric district. Despite the hefty price tag (it is Mood after all), I fell in love and couldn’t resist getting one yard to make a blouse. I was super excited to work on the blouse once we got home from our trip, but Costume College sewing took precedence. However, the blouse was the first thing I worked on after recovering from the Costume College plague.
I used a Simplicity kimono-style wrap pattern as my base, but heavily altered it, changing the neckline, incorporating cap sleeves, and taking out a significant amount of ease to help it fit my narrow shoulders. The blouse is sewn with French seams (my personal favorite seam finish), and all the edges are hemmed by hand with a rolled hem. It closes with snaps and is finsihed with a removables self-fabric belt.
Since I started working from home, I have much less opportunity to wear “fancy” clothes or vintage reproductions, but I think this style of blouse will work nicely in my everyday life. It’s flattering and stylish, but still casual enough to wear to the grocery store or running errands, a very important point now that I rarely go anywhere else.
